Getting Older
I have been reading about and identifying with the aging warrior Joshua. He had done his very best to fulfill the calling God had for him – but there was still so much territory to be taken!
“When Joshua was old and well advanced in years, the Lord said to him, ‘You are very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over” Joshua 13:1.
I’ve also read ahead into the book of Judges to see what a speckled lot they were! Not a great time in Israel’s history. As I look to the future, I ask the same questions and realize that is God’s business – He will call people to His service at the right time and place.

I am a couple of months into a new older year. Recently I have booked a time to have a cataract removed and will have x-rays for my twingy back. I visited my dentist last week and found she is retiring. Yesterday I was having coffee with the guys at a busy Tim Hortons and as I went to leave, I caught a chair leg and went kersplat on the floor in front of the whole store. At my age, they weren’t sure whether to laugh or call an ambulance!
I have been reading about and identifying with the aging warrior Joshua. He had done his very best to fulfill the calling God had for him – but there was still so much territory to be taken! Isn’t this true for all of us as we think about how short our lives actually are and how little we can do to shake the world for God.
I’ve also read ahead into the book of Judges to see what a speckled lot they were! Not a great time in Israel’s history. As I look to the future, I ask the same questions and realize that is God’s business – He will call people to His service at the right time and place. Our job is to serve the Lord the best we can and to invest in the people around us just as Joshua invested in the elders of Israel.
Charlie Brown said to Lucy: “One day we all are going to die.” Lucy replied, “Yes, that’s true, but on all the other days we won’t.”
So, in the meantime, as we age, let’s ask these kinds of questions:
-Have I ‘taken all the land’ the Lord has set before me to take?
-Am I involved with the next generation as a role model and mentor?
-Can I leave the big picture with God?
Paul reminds us in Galatians 6:9: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

One of our Encounter people gave me this link to help me know what is really going on in Israel. In light of the current Satanic surge against all things Jewish, it might be helpful for you to access this app: www.newsrael.com. It’s called Newsrael…
